Teachable Woman Podcast
Reverends Michele Owes and Diana P. Cherry
Introduction: Reverends Michele Owes and Diana P. Cherry discuss the Sin Series. Listeners are encouraged to think more on the righteousness afforded us by Jesus Christ than the lure or pull of sin.
- Sin is Sin to God - God does not grade sin. The grading or classing of sin was created for the legal system to punish the abusers.
- Sin Pays a Wage - The wages of sin is death. It may not be physical death. It can be death of a trust, relationship, or an opportunity.
- Sin is a Choice - Man makes the decision to do they want rather that what God allows.
- Sin is Pleasure for a Season - Hurt, disappointment, and pain are the result.
- Sin means to miss the mark , trespass, and to choose evil over good.
- God's love provides a way of escape from sin .
- All have Sinned and come Short of the Glory of God - We were born in sin and shaped in iniquity. Jesus saves us from our sin.
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: [00:00:00] Welcome, welcome, welcome, welcome, welcome. Welcome back to The Teachable Woman Podcast. We are so excited to be back with you up on tonight. I am Reverend Michelle Os. I am with the Reverend Mrs. Deanna p Cherry. Together we are teachers of good things. Mrs. Cherry, please say hello to our podcast family.
diana-p--cherry_9_05-15-2025_203907: Hello Podcast family. It is our fervent prayer that you're madly in love with the Lord and that you're walking uprightly before him and that he is your number one priority in life.
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: Amen to that. I don't know that I have heard madly in love attached with Jesus, but I like it. It's a new thing, but I like it.
diana-p--cherry_9_05-15-2025_203907: Oh yeah.
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: I think I know I have always only associated the whole madly in love thing with the human earthly [00:01:00] fleshy kind of love, but you just made it. Holy well. All right then.
diana-p--cherry_9_05-15-2025_203907: His is the best love. It's supreme.
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: True. That is true. That is all right. We are back and we have been working on our SIN series and we pray that you are being blessed by it. We want you to know there is no condemnation in Christ Jesus and we are not sharing the SIN Series to accuse, to condemn, to drag up any past, but just to help us. Put sin in the proper perspective.
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: First to know that sin is sin with the Lord. There are no grades. There are no, there's no greater sin or lesser sin. Sin is just sin across the board with the Lord. We shared with you that our governmental systems have created levels of sin so that they can know how to or choose. How to punish those who break the law.[00:02:00]
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: But with God, sin is just, sin is just sin. Across the board. We shared with you that. All have sinned and come short of the glory. David said that he was born in sin and shaped in iniquity. So we talked about the fact that when Adam ate of the tree, of the knowledge of good and evil, that sin came into the earth and when sin came into the earth.
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: It said by one man's sin, we all became sinners. And so it became a flood of sin in the earth. Man was left to his own thoughts and to his own devices, and, but by one man's righteousness, which is Christ Jesus by one man's righteousness, we all can be saved. And so we challenge us to think about the fact that.
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: What will our righteousness bring [00:03:00] to our lives and to our families? And then what has sin cost us? We cannot know the depth of what the cost was because we learned that we can make a decision, but we don't get to choose the consequences of the decision. We know that when Adam chose to eat of that tree, he didn't think he would lose his home.
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: He didn't think he would first realize that he was naked, meaning he was exposed but he lost his home. He had to leave the garden, the place that God had created for him. And so we also learned that sin pays a wage and that the wages of sin is death. But it doesn't have to be physical death. It can be death of an opportunity, death of a trust, death of a relationship, death in so many different forms.
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: We also learned, we learned a lot about sin, didn't we? We gave, we gave a definition of [00:04:00] sin and we said that sin is to miss the mark. Sin is anything that separates us from God. We also added some additional definitions to that in that, you know, sin is to choose to do evil when we know to do right, but today we want to talk about the fact that sin is fun, but only for a season.
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: The result of the fun that we've had for the season typically ends up in hurt and it ends up with disappointment. It starts off with a lure, with an exciting lure that makes you think that it's going to be the greatest. That is going to be the most, right? And then afterwards, there is the dis disappointment.
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: There is the hurt, there's the shame that goes [00:05:00] along with it. And so we wanna just dive a little bit into that tonight. Our scripture references Hebrews 11 and 25. Which says, choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season. In other words, that should be our choice.
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: Our choice should be to suffer any afflictions with the people of God rather than to enjoy sin for a season. Because at the end of the sin, there's going to be a wage that. Is paid, but it's not the kind that we're used to getting in our paychecks once a month or every two weeks or once a week. However, you get paid.
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: It's not that kind of wage. It's a wage that subtracts from the overall wellbeing of your life. Sin also damages our soul, the condition of our soul, and that puts us in a position that [00:06:00] is not a, it's not a good one. It's not a good one. Alright, Ms. Cherry, help us out.
diana-p--cherry_9_05-15-2025_203907: Praise the Lord, you know? It would be nice if we focused also on the fact that we have been made free from sin and we have been made righteous. Because the wages of sin is death, and sometimes we don't recognize the things that sin has killed.
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: Yeah,
diana-p--cherry_9_05-15-2025_203907: But you know,
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: you.
diana-p--cherry_9_05-15-2025_203907: you're virgin and you sin give up your virginity, well your virginity is dead.
diana-p--cherry_9_05-15-2025_203907: You can't resurrect it. You virgin wants. You know, and it's not gonna come back. So sometimes we think that the scripture is surely nothing's gonna die. Sometimes sin causes a death of relationships. Sometimes sin [00:07:00] causes a death and family family fellowships and relationships. everybody on Earth has somebody in their family who's still out in the world and you don't wanna be bothered with. you don't, you don't want to maybe earn some of their wage, you know? But I think it would be good for us to realize that we, Jesus Christ, died so we don't have to be bound by sin any longer because he died and we accept him as our Lord and Savior. We have been made, made the righteousness of God through
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: Through Jesus.
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: That is true. God made us right. And I think that's an important thing for us to focus on. Oftentimes, we do not, we tend to focus on the fact that we have sinned and sometimes our sin takes us to a place that we didn't [00:08:00] desire to be in. Because it was a, it was a consequence of the choice, but we forget about the fact that.
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: We can ask God who is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us of all unrighteousness, and then begin to live right. Mr. Cherry, you said to us in several of the SIN episodes that we can just pick ourselves up and throw our shoulders back after we have asked God to forgive us and to cleanse us and to, you know, walk out with our righteousness.
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: We don't have to stay in it, and we don't have to suffer through it. But sometimes sin binds us to the situation and we are, we're not able to see our way out. But the scriptures tell us that with every temp temptation, you know, that God has given us a way out. So we have to look for that way out.
diana-p--cherry_9_05-15-2025_203907: Mm-hmm. And my husband used to teach that and the Bible [00:09:00] says also the very thing that you're tempted with, will use that very thing to make a way of escape for us. And so, you know, I think, I think really, I think Reverend Os the most important thing that all of us need to realize that if we sin, it's 'cause we choose to,
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: Yeah, we
diana-p--cherry_9_05-15-2025_203907: the choices are
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: just said
diana-p--cherry_9_05-15-2025_203907: versus are long lasting and life changing.
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: yes.
diana-p--cherry_9_05-15-2025_203907: the bottom line is Jesus Christ. When Adam sending the garden, the Bible says that by one man's sin. We were all born in sin shaped in iniquity, but it also says by one man's obedience by one man's righteousness. We've all been made righteous, and sometimes I think that maybe we focus more on what Adam did than we do on what Jesus did.
diana-p--cherry_9_05-15-2025_203907: We are free
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: Yes, yes.
diana-p--cherry_9_05-15-2025_203907: longer have to be bound by sin, and if we find ourselves [00:10:00] in sinful situations. It is because we choose to be, because we have grace, grace empowers us so that we no longer have to be bound. The word of God says that God gave the law so that we could recognize how lawless we were, but then when Jesus came, we have grace, grace is much more powerful. Than any sin, than anything that we're tempted with. And you know, just to tell the truth, you and I don't have to sin. It's a choice. And that choice, why would we choose something that would lead to death when we can make a choice to give us life everlasting and, and we can walk in obedience to the word of God. So. The will of man is the strongest force in operation in the earth, [00:11:00] but we control our wills and so, you know, I just really wanna encourage people to know that we don't have to do, and if we are in a situation where someone is having much influence over us, then we need to pick up our grace and run because we don't have to yield. To to sin, to the lust of the flesh. We really don't have to. And if we are born again Christians, we really need to focus on the fact that I am the righteousness of God through Christ Jesus. You are listeners. You are the righteousness of God through Christ Jesus. Jesus died so that we don't have to earn any more wages sin. The devil has no place in us unless we give him place. That's why the scripture says, give no place to the devil. And [00:12:00] you know, I think back when, when I was young and, and didn't know a thing about the Lord, you know, everything that I did, I knew what I was doing. And I was doing it because I wanted to do it.
diana-p--cherry_9_05-15-2025_203907: You know? You know, and, and once I got saved, lost the want to do that. And I changed. It systematically changed. And again, it goes back to teaching that we did probably about a year ago now, on thinking.
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: Yes.
diana-p--cherry_9_05-15-2025_203907: That's why it's so important how you think, because you think wrong, you're gonna do wrong.
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: I.
diana-p--cherry_9_05-15-2025_203907: And if we think right, we're gonna do right. So it's a matter of choice and it's a matter of thinking and, and I don't wanna focus too much. The power of sin because the Bible says sin has no power over us. It has damage. do us damage, but it has no power unless we choose to give it some power. So [00:13:00] for those of us who might still be struggling and who might not really believe that you can do it, you can do it. I mean, we've done it and it's not because.
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: Well, I'm glad you said that because I was gonna say, well, Mrs. Cherry, what would your response be to someone who said, well, that's because you all are older. It's because you've been married. It's because your husbands have gone home to be with us. It's because, because, because, but what you just said is true.
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: Sin is a choice, and it is a choice that we make. You know granted there are people who kidnap who drug, who, who, you know, take us, who take women against their will. Granted, there are those things, those are crimes.
diana-p--cherry_9_05-15-2025_203907: Yes.
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: But every day, whether I'm gonna do this or whether I'm not, that decision has, is ours.
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: Yeah. And so it is our choice and, and when we are making the decision, we think it's going to [00:14:00] be the right one or to lead to something. And then when we find out that it doesn't, and we, it's time to pay the wage that sin requires, nobody wants to pay the wage. So part of the goal of the SIN Series is to make sure that all of us understand that we do have a choice.
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: We understand that sin does have a lure, and when you feel the lure, as Ms. Cherry said, pick up your grace and run. She didn't say walk out. She didn't say strobe. She said Run. And we mean run. That's right. I, I mean, run. She said, haul off and run. She went down south with it. She said Haul off and run. So pick up your grace, put your high heel sneakers on and run.
diana-p--cherry_9_05-15-2025_203907: Yes,
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: the wage of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus. Is that not a better choice?
diana-p--cherry_9_05-15-2025_203907: yes, yes. And you know, we have to, [00:15:00] have to make loving God our highest priority.
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: Yes.
diana-p--cherry_9_05-15-2025_203907: one thing every day of our lives, we should wake up and, and commit to the fact that God, today you're gonna be my number one today. I don't wanna make a decision. And we talked about this before. I don't wanna go anywhere, I don't wanna do anything. I wanna be led by your spirit. I want you to direct all that I do. And God, if God is directing you, he's not gonna direct us into sin.
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: That's true. It's very true. That is true, which is why there is with temptation, a way of escape because God is not directing us to sin. He is directing us to the way of escape that he is making for us. But we have to recognize that there is a way and we have to choose that way.
diana-p--cherry_9_05-15-2025_203907: Yes.
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: We have to.
diana-p--cherry_9_05-15-2025_203907: I think one of the greatest things that we can do [00:16:00] is to find contentment. The states that we are in. Has a perfect life. Nobody that I've ever met in my life, 81 years has had a perfect life, but we can certainly have a good life in Christ Jesus if we choose do the things that will add to our lives and avoid the things that are killing our lives. The bottom line is yes, sin is here, sin is prevalent, sin is everywhere you look. But we don't have to be overcome by sin.
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: That is true. That is true. Yeah. I, I think as we mature in our relationship with Christ Jesus and we understand how much he loves us and how much he has protected us and [00:17:00] provided for us, and made ways for us, when we acknowledge who he is in our lives, you can become so absorbed with. How honorable and how precious and what a privilege it is that you don't wanna disappoint.
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: I rem you just don't wanna disappoint him. I remember growing up there was a way that my mother used to call my name and the way that she would call my name, I, I knew when I disappointed her because there was a tone with it and it wasn't a yell or a scream, but it was a Michelle. You know, the, the, the lower, you know, the, it was not a higher, it is not a, hi Michelle.
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: It was like Michelle. It was, and that was a. That thing hurt me right there more than anything else, just the way she called my name. I knew then that I disappointed her and I never wanted to hear her [00:18:00] call me that way again. Right. Made lots of mistakes as a child and as a young woman growing up. Did. Just did some.
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: Things I ain't had no business doing. Things that we thought were fun, that were quite dangerous but the bottom line is just to hear her call my name that way, let me know that I disappointed her. And that was something that I never desired to do. So when I became a young adult, I, and, and got saved and learned that I had a responsibility not only to myself, but to my family.
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: I had a responsibility to be a good daughter to her. I remembered saying to her one day, I'm gonna be the one child that you won't have to worry about. I said, that's gonna be my gift to you. It may not be houses, cars, and lands, but I'm going to be the one child that you don't have to worry about.
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: You're not gonna lose sleep about me at night. I'm going to follow Christ. [00:19:00] And as long as I'm following him, I'm gonna be in a good place. Doesn't mean that I'm not gonna be hurting sometime or sad sometimes, but you are not going to have to worry about me. I'll be the child that you won't have to worry about.
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: And one day I asked her, I said, am I? She's like You are. You are the one child that I do not worry about. It's like, yeah, we making it. Jesus. We.
diana-p--cherry_9_05-15-2025_203907: blessing. You know, when you talked about your mother and Michelle, I can just, I, I can hear her saying your name and you know what? It reminded me of God and Adam in the garden, and you imagine what that tone of voice was
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: Yeah.
diana-p--cherry_9_05-15-2025_203907: when God said, where are you? You know, what have you done my child?
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: Yeah.
diana-p--cherry_9_05-15-2025_203907: everything.
diana-p--cherry_9_05-15-2025_203907: What have you done? And, and that's what I thought about. And I think I think that it would be good if all of us could imagine God [00:20:00] calling our name at times. We miss the mark
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: Yeah.
diana-p--cherry_9_05-15-2025_203907: and understanding how we break his heart.
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: Yes.
diana-p--cherry_9_05-15-2025_203907: Again, I used to say we crucified Jesus a. With every act of
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: And.
diana-p--cherry_9_05-15-2025_203907: I think I wanna share Romans 20.
diana-p--cherry_9_05-15-2025_203907: Lemme see Romans 6 22 it says, but now other, in 21, it talks about we don't have no fruit in the things that we did that we are now ashamed of. Sin brings shame. And we're shown that the things that we did and, and, and, but now we have our fruit unto holiness and the end is everlasting life for the wakes of sin is death the gift of God is eternal life.
diana-p--cherry_9_05-15-2025_203907: But listen, verse number 17 of Romans [00:21:00] chapter six, but God be thanked. we were the servants of sin. We served sin when we didn't know the Lord, we have obeyed him the heart. That form of doctrine, which delivered us. And now the word of God says in verse 18, we've been made free from sin. You and I, we are free. We don't have to do it. We are not bound by sin. We are righteous people. so I would really like for all of us, maybe we can make a little confession each day I'm not a sinner, I'm righteous, free from sin, I'm righteous. I'm the righteousness of Jesus talk. You know, I know that it's a lot of temptations out here.
diana-p--cherry_9_05-15-2025_203907: Listen, I understand. Trust me. I understand. [00:22:00] talk to yourself. Yourself is always with you
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: Mm-hmm.
diana-p--cherry_9_05-15-2025_203907: and yourself can get you out of a lot.
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: Mm-hmm.
diana-p--cherry_9_05-15-2025_203907: Change how we think. Change what we do. where we go
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: Yes.
diana-p--cherry_9_05-15-2025_203907: be the righteousness of God because we obey Jesus from the heart.
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: the heart.
diana-p--cherry_9_05-15-2025_203907: And now we serve righteousness. We don't have to serve sin.
diana-p--cherry_9_05-15-2025_203907: So I really hope that you're encouraged by these teachings because of us have challenges and things that we face, you and I, we don't have to get into them 'cause we got the grace of God in our lives.
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: Yeah.
diana-p--cherry_9_05-15-2025_203907: be strong, be encouraged. You don't have to let anything you down.
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: Amen. Amen. And if you have a moment where it didn't go the way you wanted it to go, if God. Trust you with another moment. That means it can be better.[00:23:00]
diana-p--cherry_9_05-15-2025_203907: That's
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: it didn't go the way you wanted it to go, if God is trusting you with some more moments in life, that means he's giving you some time to make it better.
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: So work on the better and part of working on the better is to join us at our Women's Retreat, July 17th through 20th. The teaching will end on the 19th. If you need to get outta Dodge at H Town, Houston, Texas for the Teachable Woman Retreat. For the transformative power of prayer. I am really excited about this retreat.
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: We are going to be doing some workshops. We're gonna teach us how to solve some problems according to the will and the word of God, and how to work through life's issues. Through prayer, we're gonna see the fruit. I am so excited about what we're going to be doing there, Ms. Cherry, and I don't want anyone to miss it.
diana-p--cherry_9_05-15-2025_203907: Yes. Hey, shall we tell 'em what the 17th is? The [00:24:00] 17th is my 82nd birthday, so come be with us to celebrate that. God has allowed me to live for 82 years.
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: All right. Well, you know what that means. That means P-A-R-T-Y. That means partee, not according to how we did it in the world, but according to the will of God.
diana-p--cherry_9_05-15-2025_203907: No ice
rev--michele-owes_9_05-15-2025_194514: And so,
diana-p--cherry_9_05-15-2025_203907: cake.
